Hysteria was once a catch all diagnosis for anything that seemed to be wrong with women, wether that be pain, infertility, irritability, women acting too feminine or not feminine enough. It was a disease that was thought to be caused by the uterus and was later defined as a mental illness by Sigmund Freud. Nowadays, what was thought to be the mental illness hysteria has been divided into different diagnosis such as somatisation disorder or multiple personality disorder.
